Flower Friday #13
May 28, 2004
Recently my girlfriend commented that I spend far too much time taking "close-up" photos, so I decided to zoom out a little. Maybe she's right. Photos of flowers don't have to be so intimate do they!?
So, off I went to the artist's shop to buy a large piece of black picture-mounting card. This is the backdrop to the shot. It's at night, indoors, with artificial lighting and a tripod.
Still need some more practice on "studio" shoots and need to learn more about lighting. Here I held a piece of paper against the light source to cast a shadow and prevent any highlights you normally get on these plastic-looking lilies. Maybe I'll invest in an angle-poise lamp.

Can't remember if I mentioned foam-core or bounce cards to you. Get a nice size piece of something white and rigid and bounce all of your light off of that. Get two and use two different intensity (and sometimes diff coloured) lights from either side of the camera. No glare, smooth fill lighting.
And I should add, your piece of paper trick did just fine. That's sublte and nice lighting there.
Thanks Jerry. Hadn't thought of that. Shall nip back to the shop and get a white piece of this card...
Go for large pieces. Minimum of .5m square.
Wrap one in foil for brighter and sharper bouncing.
