Another physiogram. See
the first for a brief how-to. This one is a little different though. I've used my red and yellow filters to inject some colour. Simply place the filters over the lens from time to time and you get some fancy effects like this. You have to be quick though. You can see at points where the colours change that there's a blank patch where the filter passes over the lens. The aperture is small enough, at f/22, for this to have an effect.
Going to have to get some other colour filters. I enjoy making these!

This is fantastic. Im wondering how well it would work with a digital.. maybe I'll try it.
Thanks T(r?)udy. This was with digital. I used a Canon 300D. Would hate to experiment like this with anything but digital ;o)
Jake, this is fantastic. I want to give it a try. I just need to get my hands on one of those little lights. I have a 'smaller' flashlight but think that it would be too bright.
Any idea how long you kept the shutter open?
Tom. Probably worth trying with the torch you have first. The one I have is quite bright too. In comparison to what though I can't say.
Not sure on the exact exposure (away from home at the moment) but most of them were between 20 and 30 seconds.
I must say Jake that I have been following your photo site for a long time and I have really seen a change in your photos... They just keep getting better.
Thanks Tom. I don't mind saying I think they're getting better too. Trouble is, with some success comes the pressure to maintain a level...
Here are some of my own attempts. I first took them about 40 years ago, but with a moving camera as well. Then I recently scanned them into Photoshop and applied filters.

Brilliant Barry. How did you achieve the different shapes? Is this where the "moving camera" comes in? Got any tips? I thought I'd done all there was to do with physiograms. You've given me more fuel for thought.
Jake, the short answer is "yes". The long answer is "watch this space".
I intend to publish on my web site the basics of those physiograms. This should be by 1st November. I'll post here when I've done it.
It will include the principles of how different motions of the light and camera combine to give the results.
I have found some more, which I think are better than those shown so far. I'll show those at the same time.
Thanks Barry. Looking forward to it!
Jake, I have now updated my web site.
I have split the physiogram gallery into 2: one showing the original monochrome versions, and the other showing the processed versions.
www.barry.pearson.name/photography/
I have added 20 more physiograms to the gallery showing the originals. So that gallery is in 2 blocks - the first block was already published, and corresponds to those also processed in Photoshop. The second block is new to the web.
I have written some pages describing how the originals were done, and the significance of the shapes.

I want to link to physiograms on the web. I have 3 links to blog items of yours. It would be useful instead to have a single URL so that I didn't have to change my links when you add new physiograms.
I'll probably add more descriptives pages, but I think I've now uploaded all the original physiograms worth showing.
Thanks Barry. I'll be in touch once I've digested this info and had a play.
Jake,
Your images are great I really like the fine line and spacing you are getting. I am going to have to try one of those lights. I have been using a regular flashlight with a card in the lens with a very small appeture. This makes my lines closer together which sometimes can lead to overexposure.
Take a look at these images
hello,
i am going to try my hand at this pendelum photography. my cannon powershot A75 only allows the shutter to stay open for 15 seconds, long enough?
Jennifer
Should be long enough Jennifer. Although your larger aperture might mean it's not as black as you might like in the background. Easily corrected in Photoshop though.
I tried my hand at it the other night and got some great results. here is my yahoo album, if you would like to check it and some of my other shots out. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/duce_622/album?.dir=1b8d
Jen
ps thanks for the help!!!
I updated the pics in my album. I cant keep the shutter on my camera open long enough to get a true "pendelum" affect, but we did come up with some pretty kewl light designs.
