I think the blueness is due to having the wrong white-balance setting.

Yes. We used white balance for some fun effects on old tube style video cameras in college... try white-balancing against a colored piece of paper. You get a cast that is 180 degrees out of phase with the color of the paper. We used a bright piece of blue and shot under daylight to simulate thermalvision at night. Worked great.
