Might be more interesting cropped to show just the bark?
I disagree with Jerry's comment. It wouldn't be more interesting, just different.
Well, consider that with the background, you know roughly the setting in which the tree is placed... a sunny day. Notice the lighting on the bark. Cropped to show only the bark, you would be left to wonder at the setting. This might create some interest. The texture of the bark and the lighting stands on its own. The background is a little bit of a distraction and lends itself, framed as it is, to an off balance composition.
Just some thoughts.
I see your point, but the "off balance composition" is exactly what I like about it. The just bark idea is a good idea, but it would become a different image altogether.
I see what you're saying. You would lose the 'scenic' aspect altogether with the cropping.
